From Padangbai the public ferry crosses to Lembar on Lombok, four hours or so, running whether or not anyone is in a hurry. Traders, families and workers sleep on mats in the corridors, on the deck, wherever there's floor. Then north to Bangsal, and a second boat out to Gili Air — eggs, cardboard boxes and passengers, low in the water.
