Negombo Fish Market

Negombo's fish market — Lellama — runs on a strip of beach where the lagoon meets the sea. Thousands of boats work out of here. The catch is cut on trestle tables in the open, and what isn't sold fresh is salted and laid out to dry on coconut-fibre matting, turned by hand until the sun's done its work. The market closes on Sundays, when the fishermen are at church.
